The District Local Government Organization of Larnaka (DLGOL), in accordance with Article 27 of the Law on the Environmental Impact Assessment of Certain Projects of 2018, announces that it has submitted to the Department of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, an Environmental Impact Assessment Study (EIA), regarding the construction of the project “Upgrading and Extension of the Larnaka Wastewater Treatment Plant”, which it is putting out for public consultation.

The project concerns the construction of the necessary works for the upgrading and extension of the Larnaka Wastewater Treatment Plant in order to increase the capacity of the plant by approximately 60,000 population equivalent (p.e.) so that the plant will eventually serve 160,000 p.e. The new projects include an anaerobic digestion plant for sludge and projects to use the biogas produced from the digestion for energy production.

Apart from its obvious environmental and social importance, the project is particularly important as its implementation and operation will fully meet the requirements of the Republic of Cyprus’ compliance with Directive 91/271/EEC on urban waste water treatment, as applicable. In addition, the project fulfils target No 6 (Clean Water & Sanitation for All) of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to which the Republic of Cyprus is a signatory.

In this context, all interested parties are invited to submit to DLGOL, by 15/11/2024 and at info@eoal.org.cy, any views or representations regarding the content of the study or the impacts that the implementation and/or operation of the project may have on the environment.

A public presentation of the project will take place on 06/11/2024 at 10:00 am at the Larnaka Wastewater Treatment Plant.
